KARACHI: Lyari in grip of multi-pronged problems

KARACHI, June 6: Lyari is in the grip of multi-pronged civic and social problems.

To highlight these problems, a meeting of the Young Lyari Welfare Centre was held here on Tuesday.

Issues faced by the area residents, including unemployment, severe water shortage, shabby roads, choked sewerage, dismal education and healthcare facilities, narcotics trade and law and order situation were discussed in the meeting.

The meeting participants observed that the KWSB officials were involved in what they called “artificial water shortage” in Lyari, adding that illegal water connections were the root cause of the issue.

They further said that power shutdown were more frequent in Lyari than any other part of the city. They said that sometime the power outage lasted for 24 hours, creating immense problems for children and women, especially for students preparing for exams these days.

Garbage dumps can be seen in almost all streets as garbage collection was dismal in whole Lyari, especially in UC-3, Kara Bhai Karim Ji Road Nauabad.

Half of Lyari population lives in Darya-Abad, Nauabad, Khadda, Kalri, Baghdadi and Moosa Lane and there was not even a single government hospital in these areas.

He demanded of the government to set up at least a dispensary in the area, which could provide medical treatment to locals. He further said Lyari always faced lack of educational facilities.

“Non-existence of BEd college for teachers is creating difficulties for female teachers, and BEd classes can be started in evening shift at Raunaq Islam Government Girls College.—PPI
