PESHAWAR, June 5: The People’s Lawyers Forum has said that the ‘charter of democracy’ will strengthen the political culture and close the chapter of military coups in Pakistan forever.

Speaking at a news conference at the Peshawar Press Club on Monday, Barrister Masood Kausar, a former Pakistan People’s Party provincial chief, said the PLF would organise a seminar on June 10 at the Nishtar Hall. PPP secretary-general Jahangir Badar, Barrister Aitezaz Ahsan, Mian Raza Rabbani, Babar Awan and others would speak on the occasion.

Mr Kausar said those who dubbed the charter of democracy a two-party deal live in a fool’s paradise. He said it was an outline of good governance set by the two major parties to end the rule of selective power groups. He said the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy had already endorsed the charter.

He said that lawyers’ community had always fought for the supremacy of constitution, independent judiciary and rule of the law in the country. “The lawyers’ community through its peaceful and constitutional struggle will force the fake representatives of the people and their masters to quit power,” he added.

Barrister Kausar said Pakistan could not earn progress and respect under the military rule, which was not familiar to democratic norms and a civilised way of governance.

Mr Kausar said the PPP and PML-N were the major political forces, which had agreed on a political programme to rid the country of a permanent military rule.

He said the military rulers had always introduced apolitical system based on coercion, nepotism and corruption.
