KARACHI: Scientific disposal of industrial waste urged
KARACHI, June 5: Sindh Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman has cautioned the concerned departments that there can be no compromise when it is the question of disposal of industrial waste and contamination of water resources.
“No negligence or slackness in this regard will be tolerated”, he warned and directed that practical steps should be taken for scientific disposal of industrial waste and elimination of water and environmental pollution through an effective sewerage system.
He was presiding over a meeting in his office on Monday.
The Chief Secretary expressed sorrow over the death of a child and injuries to others after they got stuck in poisonous industrial waste in SITE last month.
The managing director of SITE, Shahzar Shamoon, was directed to ensure that such incidents does not recur in future.
Fazlur Rehman directed that it should be made binding for industrial owners to follow rules and regulations for appropriate disposal of industrial waste with installation of treatment and oxidation plants to ward off any threat to human life.
He said that industries showing carelessness should be issued notices and compliance to regulations be strictly ensured.
The meeting was informed that completion of oxidation plant in Industrial Estate Kotri is expected on June 30 which will have good effects.
It was stated that treatment plant project of DHA will be completed next month.
The chief secretary directed the DG of Environment, DCO of Hyderabad and MD of SITE to adopt a joint strategy against industrial pollution and this would be monitored by the secretary of implementation.
The meeting was attended by Nazar Hussain Mahar, Shuja Ahmed Junejo, Khawar Jamil, Mohammed Iqbal Dewan, Mir Shafqat Talpur, Dr Iqbal Saeed Khan, Tahir Ahmed and Mohammed Khan Ameer Ali Behan.—APP
