Nomi made to fight for title

KARACHI, June 4: Top seed Nomi Qamar took over two hour to down second seed Jalil Khan in three sets in the final to recapture men’s singles crown in the Rs75,000 10th Anti Tobacco Day tennis tournament at the CDGK Sports Complex on Sunday.

After losing the first set and trailing 5-6 in the second, Nomi, staged a remarkable comeback to emerge 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victorious and earned a purse of Rs10,000 in addition to a glittering trophy.

Former National hard court champion and top seed, Sehr Khawaja, also regained women’s singles crown inflicting 6-2, 6-1 defeat on Shandana Khan. She also took home Rs10,000 besides trophy.

The organisers had announced Rs20,000 apiece for the men’s and women’s singles winners but it was reduced to half which left much to be desired.

Jalil, member of the current Pakistan Davis Cup team, played attacking shots which earned him winners as he raced on win the opener 6-1.

He maintained his consistency and surged 5-4 and then 6-5 ahead in the second when Nomi broke his serve to win 7-6 (7-4) to level 1-1.

After being tied 2-2 in the decisive set, Nomi took advantage of Jalil unforced errors and went on to win 6-4.

Women’s singles: Sehr Khawaja bt Shandana Khan 6-2, 6-1.
