KARACHI, June 4: Except for shopkeepers of different markets, majority of the citizens have hailed the governor’s decision of enforcing Shops Act in the city whereby all shopping malls and markets of the entire city, including the Defence Housing Authority, would be required to be closed down their business after sunset from June 15.
Commenting on the decision which would be enforced from June 15, a number of people calling from different residential areas expressed hope that the move would provide relief to the citizens from frequent electricity breakdowns and loadshedding of longer durations.
A number of people were of the view that implementation on the decision would also help vehicular traffic to pass smoothly from the major thoroughfares of the city which nowadays remained occupied with cars and motorcycles of those who had developed the habit of thronging markets after sunset.
Terming the governor’s decision timely and bold, a doctor who has recently returned from the United States after completing his higher education said it was strange that shopping centres in the metropolis were opened at noon and remained open till late hours in night whereas clocks were set one hour before in summer and one hour back in the winter in both the USA and England to utilise daylight merely to conserve energy.
A senior banker who normally leaves his office, located at I.I. Chundrigar Road, around half past seven hailed the decision of enforcing the Shops Act.
Citing the example of a portion of Sir Abdullah Haroon Road, near Saddar’s electronics market, which remains choked from 6pm to 11pm owing to haphazard parking of vehicles on its extreme left and right lanes, he expressed hope that the decision would help him drive through the road without any obstacle.
Moreover, he said that he was optimistic about its effect on loadshedding after June 15.
