Rice’s stance welcomed

By Qudssia Akhlaque

ISLAMABAD, May 31: Pakistan on Wednesday welcomed the statement by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice indicating willingness of the United States to talk to Iran along with EU-3.

Terming it a “positive” development, Acting Foreign Office Spokesperson Sohail Mahmood expressed the hope that it would lead to reduction of tensions and negotiations for a diplomatic solution of the Iranian nuclear issue.

“Pakistan has always supported a diplomatic solution of this problem and opposed the use of force.

We have emphasised that all parties must abide by their international obligations and no effort should be spared to find a negotiated solution,” he said.

The spokesperson underlined that while Pakistan was firmly against nuclear proliferation, it supported Iran’s right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes under IAEA safeguards.
