KABUL, May 30: Afghanistan’s parliament demanded on Tuesday the arrest of those responsible for a deadly crash by a US military truck that set off the worst riots here since the Taliban fell, as police said 12 people had died in the unrest. Later US planes bombed a mosque killing at least 50 people.
The US-led military coalition again expressed its regret about Monday’s accident, which it blamed on brake failure. The accident killed at least five people and sparked deadly unrest across the capital.
“We have 12 dead including one policeman who was badly beaten and died in the emergency hospital,” Kabul police chief Abdul Jamil Junbish told reporters.
Police had also arrested 140 people, many for alleged looting, the interior ministry said, parading some of them before the media including a 13-year-old boy.
In a special session, the Lower House decided that “those who are responsible for the traffic accident yesterday should be recognised and handed over to the law,” parliament press officer Haseeb Noori said.—AFP
