KARACHI: Lyari to get due share of water: Nasreen

KARACHI, May 29: Lyari will be given its due share of water and all illegal connections responsible for creating obstacles in the system operating through South Bank Line will be removed by the next month.

This was stated by the naib nazim, Nasreen Jalil while presiding over a meeting held on Monday to review the shortage problem of the town. The meeting discussed steps to resolve the chronic water dispute between Lyari Town and four other surrounding towns.

Nazim Lyari Town briefed the meeting that due to illegal water connections in the main supply line in SITE, Keamari, Saddar and Jamshed towns, normal supply in the town had been affected. Illegal water connections in Mohammadi Town, he said, were main source of water water contamination in the town.

He claimed that illegal connections being made in an eight inch diameter line in the Site town had badly affected supply to the locality. Moreover, water was being diverted to Jamshed and Saddar towns to facilitate apartment dwellers.

The managing director of the KWSB informed the meeting that all illegal connections causing water shortage in Lyari town would be removed.

Steps were also being taken to remove illegal connections in Mohammadi Colony and the area would be provided water through legal connections, he said.

The KWSB MD informed the meeting that the land in Mohammadi Colony belonged to the KPT and it was responsible for water supply to the town.

Maintaining that the city government was according top priority to the problems of Lyari town, Nasreen Jalil stated that the city government had taken various steps for the development of the.

Nasreen Jalil directed the KWSB that the hydrants functioning in various areas be removed with the cooperation of towns and concerned departments.

She called for implementation of water and sewerage pipelines replacement schemes for which each Town had been given Rs 50 million so that complaints of water wastage are removed.

She reiterated that the city government was keen to solve problems of Lyari area which also included water shortage problem and assured that all-out steps would be taken for the welfare of people.

The naib nazim called for having consultation with the nazims of concerned union councils with regard to system framework for water distribution by the town nazims.

It was decided that water supply to Lyari would be ensured by installing temporary valves in SITE and Keamari towns to overcome water shortage in the town.

Nasreen Jalil asked the KWSB MD to install a valve in Bihar Colony to control water theft in Keamari Town. She directed that Water Board itself should monitor it and supply of water to Lyari be ensured as per schedule.

She was appreciative of Jamshed Town for providing Rs4.8 million for helping Lyari Town.

BANK DELEGATION: A delegation of the sacked employees of Muslim Commercial Bank met the City Naib nazim, Nasreen Jalil, and apprised her of the situation which has arisen due to removal of employees, APP adds.

Nasreen Jalil described the retrenchment an unpleasing matter and urged the bank management to withdraw its decision keeping legal aspects and human rights in view.

She said this matter be brought before the City Council for discussion and decision.
