KARACHI: President urged to modify VCs appointment criteria

KARACHI, May 29: The Federation of All-Pakistan Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA) on Monday urged President Pervez Musharraf to allow the statutory bodies of the public Universities and Senate to elect their own vice chancellors to make the varsities more autonomous.

In a letter addressed to President Musharraf, FAPUASA President Prof. Sarwar Nasim said Senates of the varsities should be allowed to elect three members and from among those three, one should be appointed Vice Chancellor by the Governor or Chancellor of the University.

According to him, the said system of appointing Vice Chancellors is being practised in Bagladesh, India, China and some other countries of the world.

Sarwar Nasim said it was the right of every teacher of public sector university to become its vice chancellor after serving decades at higher education institution and added that Higher Education Commission (HEC) policy to appoint vice chancellors through a committee will not yield required results.-—PPI
