BAHAWALPUR, May 28: The Charter of Democracy will herald a new era of democracy in the days to come, according to the PML-N leaders.

They were speaking at a press conference and workers gathering to celebrate the eighth anniversary of nuclear tests carried out by former prime minister Mian Nawaz Sharif.

District president Malik Muhammad Iqbal Channar (MPA), Punjab vice-president Samiullah Chaudhry, former MNA Chaudhry Mumtaz Ahmad Jajja and others said the days of “military dictatorship” were numbered.

They praised their leader who, they said, carried out nuclear tests despite foreign pressure against it about eight years ago to safeguard the national interest. They demanded the return of both the former prime ministers, President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s resignation and constitution of an independent election commission, besides the release of Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan.

They said the opposition parties would soon launch movement against the government.

MMA: MNA Liaquat Baloch, the MMA leader, has said the alliance has reservations over the Charter of Democracy signed between Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto. At a conference here on Saturday night, Liaquat Baloch and other JI leaders said the MMA would not sign the charter blindly and instead it would like to discuss it at length with the ARD leaders.

They said free and fair elections could not be held in the presence of President Pervez Musharraf and criticised the government for price-hike, unemployment and lawlessness.
