KARACHI: Programme to improve quality of education
KARACHI, May 26: Acting City Nazim Nasreen Jalil on Friday underlined the need for coordinated efforts on emergency basis for making quality and modern education accessible to all.
Talking to a delegation of Aga Khan Education Service at her office on Friday, she said that the city government was making concerted efforts for improving the condition of government schools.
In this regard, she said, an educational committee had been set up with the cooperation of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
This committee consisting of non-official academicians started a training programme for teachers of 36 schools in coordination with education department of city government to raise the standard of education.
She said this programme would be completed in one year for which two schools had been selected from each town. She said the training programme for the remaining city government schools would be completed during the current year.
Nasreen Jalil said that a network had been established between local and foreign educational institutions through video conferencing with a view to introduce modern education in government-run schools. For the time being this video conferencing has been started between Silver Deal School, London and Government Girls High School, Landhi.
However, she said, video conferencing would also be started between quality schools in private sector and low standard government schools.
She told the delegation that non-government organisations were being encouraged to harmonise education with modern requirements. She asked the NGOs having the mission of raising the standard of education through their experiences and capabilities submit their proposals to city government.
The Aga Khan delegation highlighted their contributions in the field of education and expressed the desire to work with the city government.
Meanwhile, Nasreen Jalil inaugurated “International Travel & Holiday Mart” exhibition at Expo Centre on Friday.Speaking on the occasion, she said that the city government was developing Karachi as an attractive tourist destination besides establishing industries and constructing roads, flyovers and bypasses to turn it into a modern city.
Over 30 travel companies and airlines, including Pakistan International Airlines, have set up their stalls. Besides, the National Highway and Motorway Police also arranged stalls at the three-day exhibition.
Nasreen Jalil said that Karachi provided more than 68 per cent of national revenue and if the amount was expended on its uplift projects with the same proportion it could generate and contribute more revenue which would benefit citizens of the metropolis as well as the whole country.
She said that development of any country and city was largely based on promotion of its tourism spots and the city government was taking all possible steps for this. —APP/PPI
