KARACHI: Water shortage in several localities

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, May 25: Several parts of the city are in the grip of acute water shortage for the last one week, forcing the residents of the affected localities to either purchase private tankers or consume sub-soil unhygienic water.

The hard-hit localities include parts of North Nazimabad’s blocks C, P (Hussain D’ Silva Town), Q and R; Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s block 4-A (Journalists’ Society), a portion of Federal B’ Area’s block 14, Mehmoodabad No 5 and Clifton’s Block 2.

Besides, a number of other localities which are hooked to Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s Low Supply Reservoir (LSR) have been facing acute water shortage reportedly owing to voltage fluctuation taking place at the LSR for the last nine days.

The areas which are suffering on account of low voltage problem at the LSR include PECHS blocks 2 and 6, KDA Scheme No-1 and a number of other cooperative housing societies of Gulshan Town, Karnali Basti, Nishtar Basti and Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s blocks 14, 16 and 17.

Sources in the KWSB said since the low voltage problem had been lingering at the LSR for more than a week, pumping motors installed at the reservoir were not running to their full capacity.

They said some of the localities where water was not being pumped from the LSR in the wake of low voltage problem were being supplied water through gravity system, still some tail-end areas of those localities might be getting scant supply owing to low pressure.

Residents of North Nazimabad’s Block C complained that a number of houses of their locality, starting from House No A-594, are without water for the last 11 days.

Similarly, residents of Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s Block 4-A deplored that although they are deprived of water for the last six days, the KWSB officials concerned have not yet taken measures to restore their supply despite a number of complaints lodged with them.

However, with regard to other than LSR hooked localities, the sources said “perhaps there can be some individual complaints, otherwise, overall supply position of those localities is quite normal.”
