HYDERABAD, May 24: District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil has appealed to the Sindh governor and chief minister to direct the irrigation department for releasing some fresh water downstream the Kotri Barrage to replace stagnant water in the river ponds.

The release of fresh water will help Wasa supply potable water to the people of Hussainabad and Latifabad.

Presiding over a meeting held on Tuesday to review preventive measures against the spread of gastroenteritis in the district, the nazim said he had sent a letter to the Sindh minister for irrigation and adviser to the chief minister on local government system to help release the fresh water.

He said that due to acute shortage of fresh water downstream the barrage since long, the water there had become unfit for human consumption.

The electric conductivity of the stagnant water downstream the Kotri Barrage had touched 1,700 as against its permissible limit of 700, he said.

Keeping in view the problem, he said, the Hyderabad district government had suspended water supply to the people from the waterworks of Hussainabad, Latifabad Unit No.4 and other areas, including Giddu, Pathan Goth, Latifabad Unit No.4, 5, 6, 10 and 11, including Ayoob Colony, Bralivi Colony.

These areas were being supplied filtered water through Thandi Sarak Pumping Station.

He said Wasa and HDA had been directed to increase its water tanker fleet and to provide free-of-cost drinking water to the people in the areas facing water shortage, especially those of villages located along the bank of Indus River.

He also directed the management of Wasa and district health officer to educate the people about dangerous results of consuming stagnant water.

The nazim said emergency centres had been established within Wasa to provide drinking water and advised the affected people to contact the relevant executive engineer water supply on telephone for supplying free-of-cost drinking water.

WIDOWS FUND: Hyderabad DCO Mohammad Sharif Awan has said that Rs33.50 million will be distributed among 2,749 widows applying for benevolent fund.

Presiding over a meeting on Tuesday about disbursement of benevolent fund among the beneficiaries, he said the district government Hyderabad had approved 2,749 cases and kept the cheque of every individual ready for delivery and advised the beneficiaries concerned to contact the relevant branch immediately.

About the claims of employees for their marriage and funeral expenses and medical aid, the DCO said the district government had requested the Sindh government for Rs10 million to pay the above mentioned claims.
