KARACHI, May 23: A second victim, this time a police inspector, was set on fire by unknown persons in less than 24 hours in separate incidents in the city. On Monday, a 14-year-old boy was set on fire in the DHA. The boy succumbed to his wounds early Tuesday morning.
Inspector Ashfaque suffered severe burns when unknown persons set him on fire after pouring in petrol on him near Sohrab Goth early Tuesday morning.
The victim was in his car (E-2180) when he was intercepted by unknown persons near Ayub Goth who set him on fire. Police said it seems the victim was not allowed to come out of the vehicle by the suspects.
However, suspects managed to flee. A duty officer of the Sohrab Goth police station told Dawn that a police mobile patrolling the area rushed to the spot after seeing the burning car.
They took out the victim and shifted him to the Burns Unit of the Civil Hospital where he was admitted.
According to hospital sources, the victim suffered 89 per cent burns. Police said till Tuesday night no one from the victim’s family had reached the hospital.
Police said the car, driven by the victim, is registered in someone else’s name. Police reached the address, but failed to locate Ashfaq’s address in Buffer Zone.
Police said the victim, gave varying statements about his identity. Initially he identified himself as a doctor, but later he stated that he was a police inspector. Police said that they have traced the family of the wounded man who are based in Nawabshah. They have been informed about the incident, police said.
Meanwhile, the 14-year-old boy who had suffered severe burns in Defence area when he was set on fire by unknown persons succumbed to his wounds in the burns unit of the Civil Hospital at 3 am.
The victim was identified as Ayaz who had come from Mardan a week back.
Police said the victim had regained consciousness for a while in the burns unit at 11 pm when his statement was recorded. However, the police failed to contact the boy’s family in Mardan.
Police said that the boy used to collect trash and was in contact with some addict children. Police suspected that these addict boys could be suspects.
