KARACHI: SHC seeks home deptt comments in detention plea

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, May 23: The Sindh High Court sought the provincial home department’s comments on a petition alleging illegal confinement of a person since February on Tuesday.

A division bench, comprising Justices Ghulam Rabbani and Gulzar Ahmed, admonished the deputy inspector-general (operations) for filing two-line bland denial and ignorance about the whereabouts of the alleged detainee, Naiyer Hussain Zaidi, an office-bearer of Pasbaan-i-Aza. It asked the police officer to submit a statement on oath. It asked a provincial law officer to obtain and produce the home department’s comments as ordered earlier. The bench took a serious view of the police indifference in detention matters.

Petitioner Shabbir Hussain Zaidi said his brother was taken into custody by the police in February and had not been produced before a magistrate. The bench adjourned further hearing to May 25.

Ms Naz Bibi submitted through Advocate Umar Farooq Khan that her husband, Maulana Tariq Alam, was picked up in September and had not been seen since. The bench asked a federal attorney to submit a report by May 30.

EX-COUNCILLORS: The bench asked the city district government’s EDO for finance to appear on May 31 and explain why the 255 former councillors had not been paid Rs 7000 per month as honorarium for 16 months despite a court order.

Advocate Raana Khan, an ex-councillor herself, moved a contempt petition against the CDGK for not complying with a November 2005 court order even after a lapse of six months.

The bench observed that the CDGK should either have paid the outstanding amount or challenged the order in the Supreme Court.
