Militants reject compensation

By Our Correspondent

TANK, May 22: Suspected militants have warned families of those killed in military operations in Tank and South Waziristan Agency against accepting any compensation from the government. The warning was issued through a pamphlet distributed among people on Monday and attributed to Mujahideen South Waziristan Mehsud tribal area.

“The army used to describe Mujahideen as terrorists. But now, in a bid to win over sympathies of tribesmen, the government is describing them as martyrs,” said the pamphlet distributed in Tank, Frontier Region Jandola, Spinkai Raghzai and Barond in South Waziristan.

The warning further reads: “If anybody accepts money from American agents in the name of martyrs, such people’s face will be blackened, their heads will be shaved and they will be moved around on donkey-back.”

The compensation money handed over to the concerned families will be set afire, it said.

Recently, the government paid compensation to the families of those killed or wounded in military operations. Half a million rupees was paid for every dead and Rs200,000 for every seriously injured person.

Our Miramshah correspondent adds: Meanwhile, militants announced a ban on music and obscenity in Miramshah, the headquarters of the North Waziristan Agency.

Pamphlets purportedly distributed by suspected militants in the town on Monday warned shopkeepers and hoteliers to stop playing songs and showing cable TV transmissions within five days.

The pamphlets written in Urdu said: “All hoteliers and music shopowners are directed to cease immoral activities, including cable, music, gambling and sodomy within five days”.

It said that some hoteliers had turned hotels into prostitution dens and promoted un-Islamic values in society. It warned that violators would face ‘consequences’.
