KARACHI: LJ man gets life for sectarian murder

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, May 22: An anti-terrorism court sentenced on Monday a worker of the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi to serve life in jail for a sectarian murder. Judge Feroze Mehmood Bhatti of the ATC-2 also ordered Mohammed Shaukat alias Chand to pay Rs100,000 as compensation to the family of victim Sagheer Hussain Kazmi.

Judge Bhatti, however, exonerated two co-accused – Abdul Wahab Afghani and Shahnawaz alias Shani – from the murder charge while giving them benefit of doubt.

The judge sentenced accused Abdul Wahab Afghani to a five-year term for possessing an unlicensed pistol, which was seized from him at the time of his arrest by the Khawaja Ajmair Nagri police.

The victim was shot dead by three motorcyclists in Korangi in 2005 when he was going to meet his friend in Zaman Town police limits. The police had initially registered a case against unknown culprits on the complaint of victim’s father.

Special public prosecutor Ghulam Qadir Rajput examined in all 15 prosecution witnesses in the case.

JUDGMENT DEFERRED: An anti-terrorism court deferred the judgment in a kidnapping for ransom case.

Judge Ghulam Ali Samtio fixed Tuesday for the pronouncement of judgment.

Zafar Iqbal has been tried for kidnapping Arshad Raza, 9, son of Mohammad Raza, on Jan 1 in PIB police limits.

According to the prosecution, the accused, along with his two absconding accomplices, kidnapped the boy in front of his house at 2:30pm. While the CPLC was trying to track down the kidnappers through their phone calls, the police on Jan 20 received a report regarding presence of the kidnappers and the victim at a house in Gulshan-i-Iqbal.

The police raided the house and arrested Zafar. The abducted child was also recovered.
