Mehrullah overpowers Prasad

KARACHI, May 21: Pakistani star Mehrullah lived up to expectations when he thrashed Dewakar Prasad to help hosts clinch Pakistan-India boxing series 2-1 at KPT Sports Complex on Sunday.

The Asian Games champion, who was favourite, won the final bout, outclassing the Indian 30-15 in the featherweight fight.

The Karachi-based boxer dominated throughout the bout but faced some resistance at some stages. Indian skipper Parvinder Singh won the first bout against Nadir Khan before Pakistan’s Asghar Ali Shah defeated Jai Bhagwan in the second fight.

“The inaugural Pakistan-India boxing series would boost the sport in the cricket-dominated region,” said Parvindar.

“It’s a good initiative taken by officials as it is important to promote boxing in the subcontinent,” he said.

“When I was fighting I had no crowd pressure and it seemed I was at home as spectators were supporting every good move of mine,” he said.—PPI
