LAHORE, May 21: The ruling PML has recommended to the government to set up a chain of depots in the country to provide cheaper items of daily use — like wheat flour, sugar, rice, ghee, tea, pulses — to people, especially those belonging to low-income groups.
The scheme is part of a package prepared by the party through intensive discussions at various levels, including President Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.
Some of the proposals may be included in the budget, expected to be announced on June 5, while others may be incorporated in the party’s new manifesto being prepared keeping in mind the requirements of the year 2007, when the general election will be held.
These depots will be similar to the ones set up by the PPP government, led by the late ZA Bhutto, party sources say.
It is estimated that some 100,000 depots will be set up, each one meeting requirements of some 5,000 people of the area.
The depots, which will work in coordination with the utility stores, will be allotted to the party supporters.
PML sources say the step will not only provide some relief to the people, but also bring political benefits to the party.
To bring down the level of unemployment, it is proposed to give some 100,000 jobs in health and education sectors.
Party leaders believe that since a large number of posts are lying vacant in two major departments, the government should provide jobs to the people without delay.
It has also been proposed that the farming community, especially those with smaller holdings, should be provided agricultural loans plus advice about what they should grow in view of the requirements of the country.
Such an assistance could not only make the country self-sufficient in food but also bring about a green revolution, an important party leader said.
A number of steps have also been proposed to promote industry, especially the automobiles.
Party think tanks have advised the government to go for cooperation with China to provide cheaper two and four-wheelers to people.
