Horse-racing: Top sprinters to vie for honours

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, May 20: The Lahore Summer Meeting reaches a climax with the staging of seven events card featuring best sprinters in no less than three races at the flood-lit Racecourse on Sunday.

All races will be held over the sprinting distance of 1000m, two in day light and the remaining in floodlights. The first race starts at 5.30pm.

The Kotri Plate, a class III and IV combined handicap race has eight best sprinters in which champions will be seen in action.

Of them four are at present in good form, namely, Fajr, Chan, Empire Maker and Miss Pole.

The colt Fajr (Trace Creek-Best Lead) has won six races during the on-going season and placed a couple of times and is in form.

Three-year-old colt from Wathbat Nashwan, Chan, has won three races in row and placed third on his previous outing, a fortnight back.

Five-year-old horse, Empire Maker has won two back to back races and will be aiming at the third. The filly Miss Pole has won three races consecutively and was placed third in her last running.

If bloodline matters, the colt Chan should make amends for his defeat and win this race. The other three should fight for less remunerative spots.

However, the man in saddle will matter most in this seventh and last event of day and night racing.

Royal Gambler, Don't Follow and Green Street are the pick of six sprinters Drawn for the sixth race, Kotri Plate class IV division II.

In spite of his being assigned top weight carrying 9-2, five-year-old gelding, Royal Gambler look best on form while Don't Follow and Green Street will be his challengers.

Four-year-old filly Para Game, who looks a cut above in class vis-à-vis her rivals in the fifth race, Kotri Plate class IV division III, will be on the trot to make it her second successive win on Sunday.

The colt, Charming King , Big Bird and Eid will fight for the places on board.

The colt Moogly (formerly Twister) will be on the track for the first time with his new name.

Twister did not perform according to the wish of his owner Mian Maahir Ahmad, who is hoping for fluctuating fortune with the name Moogly, which may look funny to many but may sound lucky to owner. The time will testify truth.

The fourth race has a big fields of 18 acceptors barring last-minute withdrawal.

If nothing goes wrong with the five-year-old horse, Red Flame, he may prove his worth by winning the race. Zargar, Top Cat Jut Bahadur are good on form and pedigree to make it a well-contested event.

The quartet of Royal Cannon, Wendy Trace, Golden Faith and Token Of Love Looks good in the third race. They should fight it out.

The first two events, comprising class VII races are always considered events which are only meant for watching rather than to bet on.

These comprise horses, who have come down so low and in the process of demotion have lost their credibility , consistency and form to regain which it would take time.

Often the connections themselves are left wondering with fingers crossed at their performance.
