Leghari-Khosa alliance fast falling apart: Uplift work suffers

By Tariq Saeed Birmani

DERA GHAZI KHAN, May 18: Differences in the Leghari and Khosa alliance is delaying commencement of the development work in the district, as the Annual Development Programme has not been approved in time.

The alliance, since its establishment, has been facing the crisis of consensus leadership. It comprises the groups led by two tribal sardars — Dost Muhammad Khosa (district naib nazim) and district nazim Maqsood Ahmad Khan Leghari. Both are, however, unwilling to sit on a back bench.

As their differences over development schemes have gone sour, more than 200 projects have been awaiting approval. According to legal provision, schemes should be approved at least two months before the work by the district council.

Sources said the district nazim was at variance with the naib nazim because his (the latter’s) elder brother Saifuddin Khan Khosa was virtually handling the affairs in his place. Taking advantage of the situation, they said, some EDOs and police officials were not attending the district council meetings despite regular reminders.

The district naib nazim, in his capacity as convener, asked them the other day to attend the meetings regularly. During a meeting held recently, member Tayyaba Aziz asked for fateha for Amer Cheema but neither convener nor the nazim paid attention to the request.

When contacted, the naib nazim said the council would soon approve the ADP.

APATHY: Despite the public complaints against the district revenue office registrar, neither district nazim nor the executive district officer has so far taken any action.

The public has alleged that registrar Rab Nawaz Khan is not working honestly and is a trouble-making official. Scores of people took out a protest demonstration against the official and met EDO (Revenue) Mrs Iram Qureishi, but she did not take any action against him, they said.
