India stroll to victory in Caribbean opener

MONTEGO BAY (Jamaica), May 17: India got their tour of the Caribbean off and running with a commanding 116-run victory over Jamaica in a limited-overs practice match on Tuesday at Jarrett Park.

Chasing 290 runs to win from their allocation of 50 overs, Jamaica, led by West Indies left-hander Wavell Hinds, were dismissed for a 173 in 45 overs.

Munaf Patel was the most successful Indian bowler with three wickets for 30 runs from nine overs.

Tamar Lambert top-scored for Jamaica with 33 and West Indies fast bowler Daren Powell's 24 was the next highest score.

Hinds, who has fallen out of favour with the West Indies selectors, could only muster 12, and Donovon Pagon, who played two Tests last year against South Africa before injury sidelined him, got four.

Earlier, Suresh Raina had top-scored for India, after he retired on 50 from 79 balls that included three boundaries.

Mohammed Kaif and Mahendra Dhoni both fell one run short of their own half-centuries.

Virender Sehwag scored 33 and Rahul Dravid made 31 to give India a 61-run launching pad before they declined to 114 for three.

Raina, who was dropped early in his innings, and Kaif, who struck two fours and one six from 60 balls, then added 93 for the fourth wicket to get the visitors back on track.

After Raina retired and Kaif was dismissed, Dhoni came to the wicket and hit four fours and three sixes from 23 balls to dominate a partnership of 55 with Venugopal Rao.

Dhoni eventually became one of three wickets for fast bowler Andrew Richardson in 9.3 overs that cost 47 runs.
