LAHORE, May 17: Punjab University vice-chancellor Arshad Mahmood says Pakistani society is no longer a male-dominated one as women are taking active part in its development.

Speaking at the second convocation of the Government College for Women, Gulberg, on Wednesday, he said PU’s 60 per cent students were women, who clinched 80 per cent gold medals at university’s annual convocations.

The VC said it was university’s responsibility to provide trained people to various departments and organisations working for the development and emancipation of women besides enhancing their employability in such institutions.

Saying that the graduates, as future leaders, will be called on to undertake the task of nation building, the VC said the nation building would be possible only through high moral character, unimpeachable integrity and unflinching loyalty to the country.

Earlier, college principal Prof Zahida Rafiq said the college, since its inception in 1971, had established itself as a well-reputed institution. She said the results of the college in BA examinations stood at 72.35 per cent and in BSc at 68.32 per cent. She said in the local social scenario, the female students were being denied the facility of education and job opportunities. She said women without good training and skills were vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. —Staff Reporter
