KARACHI: Two bandits shot dead, two arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, May 16: Two suspected bandits were shot dead, two of their accomplices arrested while two others fled in a shootout with police during a robbery in New Town on Tuesday evening. The occupants of the apartment and police, however, remained unhurt.

The TPO of Gulshan-i-Iqbal said six men barged into the Noor Apartments near the Chandni cinema. Neighbours informed the police on Helpline 15 about the presence of the robbers. Police rushed from the nearby 15 office, located at a walking distance from the apartments.

As police surrounded the apartment building and tried to flush them out, a shootout ensued. Police shot dead two of the suspects and arrested two others. However, two of the suspects escaped, police added.

“We have recovered all of the valuables looted from the apartment,” TPO of Gulshan Asif Ajaz said. Police also seized four TT pistols from them.

The identities of the dead could not be ascertained immediately. The bodies were sent to the JPMC for postmortem.

HIGHWAY BLOCKED: Traffic on the Super Highway remained suspended for several hours early Tuesday morning.

Police said a long queue of trucks loaded with cargo was awaiting their turn at a weigh bridge. All of a sudden a truck broke the queue and attempted to head for the highway. The motorway police opened fire targeting its tyres.

Following the incident, truck drivers got together and blocked the highway in protest.

After several hours, Motorway SSP Aftab Pathan persuaded the drivers to end their protest.
