KARACHI, May 15: To address longstanding water shortage and sanitation problems in Lyari, City Nazim Mustafa Kamal has directed Karachi Water and Sewerage Board to carry out model projects in three union councils of the town.
Addressing a high-level meeting at KWSB here on Monday, he said after its success work would be carried out on the same pattern in the entire town.
Lyari Town Nazim Malik Fayyaz, KWSB MD Brig Iftikhar Haider and other officials attended the meeting, which was convened to review water and sewerage problems in the area.
Mustafa Kamal said that he had been hearing about water shortage and insanitation in Lyari since his childhood, but unfortunately these problems still existed. He, therefore, asked KWSB to work in Lyari as a model project to solve these problems forever. He told the meeting, held to review water supply situation in Lyari after functioning of K-III Project, that there was need to change water and sewerage “history” of the area.
He said that water scarcity in the area despite extra supply of six million gallon water daily indicated flaws in distribution system and faults in supply lines. He directed the KWSB to rectify the situation.
The nazim stressed the need for expediting work on revamping of water supply and sewerage system for which Rs50 million had been provided to each town. He asked town nazims to lay foundation stone of such projects so that they were completed in stipulated time.
He further asked them to register reputed companies of the metropolis with the KWSB to expedite the work. Besides, getting pre-qualification advertisement published in newspapers they should be insisted through mail or telephone to get registered with the KWSB, he said adding that private firms have no confidence in public institutions and they should therefore be told that their culture is changing and now all affairs would be carried out in a transparent manner.
On the occasion, the meeting was told that work on water and sewerage projects in the town with a cost of Rs50 million would start soon as tender had been invited for this. It was further informed that tenders for execution of sewerage projects in Landhi and Korangi industrial areas had been opened, while the same for Federal B Area and North Karachi industrial areas would be opened within a week.
Fumigation: On directive of City Nazim Mustafa Kamal, fumigation and vector control wing of city government's health department on Monday launched fumigation drive in the metropolis.
During the drive from May 15 to June 3, germicides will be sprayed at open sewer drains, breeding points of mosquitoes and flies and other vulnerable places.The town-wise schedule of the campaign is: Saddar (May 15), Shah Faisal (May 16), Gadap (May 17), Bin Qasim Town (May 18), Orangi (May 19), Landhi (May 20), Keamari (May 22), Baldia (May 23), Korangi (May 24), Site (May 25), New Karachi (May 26), Malir (May 27), Lyari (May 29), Gulberg (May 30), Jamshed Town (May 31), Gulshan-i-Iqbal (June 01), North Nazimabad (June 02) and Liaquatabad (June 03).
DO (Fumigation and Vector Control) Hammad Siddiqui directed malaria inspectors to report to respective town nazim along with malaria supervisors, drivers and vehicles on the scheduled date. Malaria supervisors were asked to submit report to the town nazim and DO fumigation and vector control concerned after conducting germicide spray on daily basis.
LAND RECORD: City Nazim Mustafa Kamal has announced that the city government would soon introduce a system whereby the record of all government and private lands would be computerised.
Chairing a meeting at Civic Centre, he pointed out that with computerisation of revenue record, the problems being faced by people in property transfer and land transactions even in cases of registration for the next 50 years would be minimised.
DCO Fazlur Rehman, EDO (IT) Dr Atardas, EDO (Revenue) Mohammed Saleh Farooqi and EDO (Finance) Roshan Ali Shaikh were also present in the meeting.––PPI / APP
