DHAKA, May 14: The Vice-Chancellor of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, resigned on Sunday after a student shot by police on Friday died.
Three students of the university were critically wounded on Friday night, when police opened fire on students agitating on the campus against the Vice- Chancellor.
The injured students were taken to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka on Saturday, where one of them, Mosharraf Hossain Shameem, a fourth year BBA student, died on Sunday.
As the news of the death spread, the students gathered around the residence of Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, and set fire to furniture and other articles on the ground floor of VC’s house, witnesses said.
The students blocked the entrance of the VC’s home and demanded his immediate resignation.
After some time, they broke open the gate and entered the compound and set fire to a car and a mini-bus parked in the garage as Mr Mosleh Uddin refused to meet the protesting students despite their repeated requests, witnesses said.
Teachers of the SUST also held a rally at the main entrance of the university at about 11:45am and expressed their solidarity with the students. Mr Mosleh Uddin sent the copy of his resignation letter to students on Sunday at 12:30pm in the presence of the Registrar of the university, Dr Jamil Ahmed Chowdhury.
