Son of top Iraqi judge, US soldier killed

BAGHDAD, May 13: Gunmen killed a son of Iraq’s top judge with two of his bodyguards and dumped their bodies in Baghdad, officials said on Saturday.

Attacks outside the capital killed five Iraqis and a US soldier, police said.

Police found the bodies of Ahmed Midhat Al Mahmoud, 22, a lawyer, and two of his bodyguards in Azamiyah district, said Hasan Sabri, the head of the local council, and Deputy Justice Minister Busho Ibrahim Ali.

The judge, Midhat Al Mahmoud, heads the country’s Supreme Judicial Council.

The bodies of three Iraqis who were kidnapped and tortured were found in the capital, police said.

Elsewhere, five Iraqis were killed in drive-by shootings, including a tribal sheikh, while a United States soldier died in a roadside bomb attack south of the capital, officials said.

In Mosul, suspected insurgents riding a taxi shot and killed Idrees Shihatha, a local tribal sheikh, as he drove his car, said police Brig Abdul Hamid Al Jibouri.

In another part of the city, a drive-by shooting killed four Iraqis and wounded one.

The victims were driving to the city from another part of the country, said the official.—AP
