KARACHI, May 13: A suspected robber was killed and two policemen were wounded in what the police claimed to be an encounter in Baghdadi on Saturday.

Police said three robbers tried to commit robbery at a shop in Moosa Lane when someone in the locality informed Madadgar 15. Police reached the spot and challenged the robbers to surrender. Instead, the robbers opened fir on police and tried to escape. Police returned the fire, killing one of the suspects. Two of his accomplices fled.

During the encounter, two policemen, Munawwar and Salman, were wounded and taken to hospital. The body of the alleged robber was also shifted to a hospital where his identity could not be established immediately. Police launched a search to arrest the absconding robbers.

ACCIDENT: A woman died and four others of a family were wounded in a road accident near the Steel Town turning on the National Highway on Saturday.

Police said that a car carrying members of a family -- Mumtaz Begum, 50, Shagufta, 30, Abdul Wasey, 11, Abdul Hai, 10, and Iqra, 12 -- was hit by a truck near the turning of Steel Mills. The injured were taken to a hospital where Mumtaz Begum was pronounced dead on arrival.

hashish seized: The Pakistan Coastguards on Saturday recovered 900 kilograms of hashish, worth millions of rupees in the international market, from a desolate place near Nalient in Balochistan, said a PCG press release, adds PPI.

The PCG officials on a tip-off recovered contraband that was to be supplied through sea to Europe and gulf countries.

The raiding team was fired upon by the drug traffickers when it reached near Nalient, a few kilometers from Gwadar. Later, the raiding team recovered several plastic bags containing hashish and took two suspects into custody.
