ISLAMABAD, May 12: Hundreds of people gathered outside Lal Masjid to protest against the killing of a Pakistani student in a German prison and delay in the arrival of his body. The protest was organised by the local ulema.
Soon after Jumma prayers, people gathered outside the Lal Masjid. Students of seminaries and general public also joined the protesters. Prominent ulema and religious scholars Mehmood Raja, Pir Abdu-Shakoor Naqshbandi, Tanvir Alvi spoke to the people gathered there.
They condemned the killing of the innocent student Amir Cheema in police custody and demanded early return of his body so that his funeral prayers could be held. They appealed to all Muslims to participate in his funeral.
Charged with anger, the protesters, including some very small students of seminaries, trampled under their feet a German flag which was burnt later on. They condemned the German government and paid glowing tributes to Amir Cheema calling him martyr and pride of the whole Ummah.
Later on, the protest gathering turned into a melee when an MMA MNA Qari Gul Rehman tried to make political statements.
This enraged the organisers of the protest and they snatched mike from the MNA.
This resulted in exchange of hot words between the supporters of Mr Rehman and protest organisers.
They also broke cameras of some photojournalists who tried to reach the stage to take pictures of the melee. However, they made reconciliation later on and tendered written apologies to all newspapers.
