PESHAWAR, May 11: The NWFP Assembly in a unanimously- adopted resolution on Thursday urged the centre to make early arrangements for bringing back the body of Amir Cheema, who died in police custody in Germany, and sever diplomatic ties with Berlin.

Zobaida Iqbal and Shagufta Naz of the Mutahidda Majlis-i-Amal tabled the joint resolution in the assembly, paying tribute to Amir Cheema.

They said Amir Cheema had repeated the feat of Ghazi Ilamdin Shaheed and had given a new direction to the pride of the Ummah by sacrificing his life for the reverence of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him).

Zobaida Iqbal rejected reports that Amir Cheema had committed suicide as portrayed by the German and European media. She alleged that the German police had killed him.

Earlier, speaking on his adjournment motion, Israrullah Khan Gandapur drew the attention of the assembly to what he called forcible and unlawful lifting of electricity poles, wires, transformers and other material by workers of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam in Dera Ismail Khan on April 13.

He alleged that a large number of JUI workers, led by Abdur Rauf, maternal uncle of JUI chief MNA Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and Hafiz Shahid, general secretary of the JUI, D. I. Khan, had stormed the Wapda warehouse and taken away material in two trucks and two tractor-trolleys in the presence of police. He said the looted material was worth Rs1,000,000.

He said the JUI workers possessed a release order of the material for electrification of villages in Maulana Fazl’s area but they could not satisfy the DCO concerned about the way they transported it.

Mr Gandapur said that when he intervened in the matter, Minister of State for Wapda Amir Muqam asked the provincial police officer to take action against the accused. However, he said, the DPO did not take any action.

Law Minister Malik Zafar Azam Khan contested the claim of Mr Gandapur. He said the incident had occurred on April 26 when the JUI had organised “Mufti Mahmood Conference” in D. I. Khan and the people who had forcibly taken away the material were not members of the JUI. He claimed that when he visited the site, police told him that Amir Muqam had sent the people to take away the material.

Mr Gandapur insisted that the incident had occurred on April 13 because on April 14, the minister had asked the Pesco management to register an FIR against the accused. He said the local police were also responsible for the incident and accused them of providing protection to the JUI workers.

The law minister asked Mr Gandapur to discuss the matter with him so that it could be resolved amicably.

Lawmakers from Hazara, including Zar Gul, Qazi Asad, and Wajiehuzzaman, staged a walkout when the treasury benches opposed a resolution tabled by Faisal Zaman, demanding allocation of 10 per cent of the net hydel profit received by the province for uplift of people affected by the Tarbela dam. Awami National Party MPAs also joined them.

Khalil Abbas of the ANP tabled an adjournment motion against shifting of Rs10 million allocated for the Arid Area Development programme in his constituency to other areas by Jamaat-i-Islami office-bearers in Nowshera. He said the amount had been exclusively allocated for exploration of new sources of drinking water and development of non-irrigated lands in his area. After an assurance by the treasury benches, he did not press his motion.

Later, speaker Mian Nisar Gul adjourned the session till Friday due to lack of quorum.
