KARACHI: British team briefed about devolution system

KARACHI, May 11: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has said that besides alleviating poverty, providing basic facilities to the poor people and putting the country on the path of development, the government was also focussing on getting the society rid of extremism and feudal mentality.

He was talking to a multi-party delegation consisting of young political leaders from UK currently on a seven-day visit to Pakistan, who met him at the Governor’s House on Thursday evening. Bilal Mehboob led the delegation.

The governor said that the democratic institutions have become stable and the assemblies were about to complete their tenure during present government. “The local governments have also successfully completed their first term and now have entered the second phase,” he said, adding that credit for all this goes to President Musharraf as the present local government system was a milestone in the history of the country. Under this system, powers have been devolved to the grass-root level.

The womenfolk and the minorities have also been given due representation in the local governments. He briefed the delegation about various projects going on in education, health and other welfare sectors.—PPI
