KARACHI: Three of a family killed in accident

KARACHI, May 11: A couple and their five-year-old child died in a road accident in Quaidabad on Thursday. Police said Wazir, 40, his wife Shazia, 32 and Waseem, 5, were on going on a motorcycle when they were knocked down by an oil-tanker near Dawood Chowrangi.

Police said the three died instantaneously. Following the accident, the police managed to arrest the errant driver of the heavy vehicle who was fleeing from the spot.

The tanker was also impounded by the police. Police shifted the bodies to JPMC for legal formalities. Police said that Wazir was a scrap dealer and used to live in Karimabad.

INJURED: At least seven demonstrators were injured when police baton-charged them to stop from proceeding towards the Governor’s House on Thursday.

Eyewitnesses said workers of the Dadu Sugar Mills were attempting to march towards the Governor’s House to stage a demonstration in support of their demands when police resorted to baton-charge on protesters. The women demonstrators were also dragged by the police women.

Some of the injured were taken to the police station of Clifton town instead of being taken to hospital for treatment.

ARRESTED: The police on Thursday arrested Naeem Hazarvi alias Tariq, an accomplice of Rehman Dakait gang, who had earlier escaped twice from the police custody, TPO Landhi said.

The suspect had escaped from the police custody when he was being shifted to the City Courts in 2003. Earlier, he had managed to escape from the lock-up of the Zaman town police station, TPO Landhi Qasim Ghori said.

A TT pistol was also recovered from his possession.
