SIALKOT, May 9: Two people were killed and as many others injured seriously in storm-related incidents in Sialkot and Okara districts on Monday night. Akmal Butt along with his five-year old daughter, Asia, was going on a motorcycle when a billboard fell on them owing to the dust storm on Khwaja Safdar Road in Cantonment. Akmal died on the spot while his daughter sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital.
Khurram was also injured when a billboard fell on him near Lorry Adda. He was admitted to the Government Allama Iqbal Memorial DHQ Hospital in critical condition.
Dozens of billboards were uprooted owing to the dust storm in Sialkot city, Daska, Sambrial, Pasrur, Chawinda and Badiana.
The citizens protesting against these incidents demanded a probe against the officials concerned of the Tehsil Municipal Administration for their alleged slackness in this regard.
Meanwhile, district nazim Akmal Cheema has ordered the tehsil municipal officer to take action against the owners of these billboards. He also directed the TMO to remove all boards from the city within four days.
The nazim claimed that almost all billboards were installed in almost congested areas without having a prior permission from the district government. He said now the district government’s sub-engineer would issue the clearance and NOC certificates for the purpose.
In Okara, a girl Irshad Bibi was killed when a tree fell on her in Aligarh village.
After receiving information about her death, her mother also died.
Medical college: Punjab Industries Minister Akmal Cheema has said the shelved project of Sialkot Medical College would soon be revived.
