KARACHI: Woman burnt to death by husband

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, May 9: A woman allegedly set on fire by her husband in the Defence Housing Authority late Monday night died on Tuesday. Following the incident, police arrested the suspect, Abdul Latif, 50, from an apartment in Badar Commercial, DHA, after neighbours informed the police about it.

Police said Shahana, 25, was sprinkled with flammable liquid in their forth floor apartment.

“The suspect was dead drunk, when police arrested him. Four or five empty liquor bottles were found in the apartment,” ASP Sohail Chattha said.

He said the woman was rushed to the burns centre of the Civil Hospital, where she died on Tuesday. The victim had suffered 98 per cent burns, according to the hospital sources.

Her husband Latif was taken to the JPMC for medical examination for the alcohol test before being shifted to the Burns Centre for treatment as he had also suffered burns. His wife had apparently tried to put up resistance, the ASP said.

Police said a dispute reportedly arose when Latif brought a prostitute into the house to which his wife objected. Her protest enraged the man so much so that he fatally burnt his wife.

Police arrested Abdul Latif on the FIR lodged by the deceased’s sister.

ARRESTED: CID police have arrested three members of an international ring involved in the credit card fraud in the city.

Two Malaysian nationals and their local accomplice were nabbed from Saddar.

Police said Chong Woei Jye and Chia Hui Kee and Shahzad were buying jewelry from a shop in Saddar through credit card on May 3. The shopkeeper got suspicions and informed the police.
