Fancied Simoom registers career’s first win

LAHORE, May 8: Fancied filly, Simoom, responded really well to jockey M. Hanif’s urging in the straight to land a game success during the 1st Lahore Summer Meeting held at the floodlit Racecourse on Sunday.

The three-year-old Simoom trained by Sohail Aziz scored a one-and-a-half length victory over bay mare Savera at the winning post to register her career’s first win for owner Syed Pervaiz Hussain Shah, who is in Hong Kong these days.

The most impressive winner of the first floodlit meeting of the current season was three to one chance dark-bay colt Fido Dido in the third race.

Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards replaced his rider Sajjad Hussain with M. Hanif and this change worked well for owner Mian Maahir Ahmad to see his colt winning.

The stewards were seen in a punishing mood and they took to task a trainer and six riders found defaulting during the fourth race.

They suspended riding boy Khalil Vicky for six months for his unsatisfactory riding on bay filly Scarlet Empress, who ran off the board in the fourth race.

They fined her trainer Sohail Aziz Rs20,000.

Riding boys Ahmad Shah, Sajjad Hussain, William, Shahid Mustafa and Nazir Ahmad were fines Rs10,000 each for not riding out their mounts on merit.

The race was won by odds-on favourite Para Game, who beat Charming King by six lengths to give jockey Shahid Rehman an effortless victory.

Soon after the race, a section of race-goers demanded cancellation of the race as in their view a couple of horses backed for place finished among also ran.

However, as the punishments to trainer and riders were announced on the public address system, they dispersed immediately.

Jockey M. Hanif, who had met with a big success during the Lahore Winter Meetings, opened his account in the summer meeting on a victorious note achieving a grand double through Simoom and Fido Dido.

Trainers A. B. Malik and Haji Ghulam Sarwar sent out two winners each.

Malik’s winners were Fido Dido and Para Game while Haji saddled Don’t Forget and Trace Hit, the filly who won easily the feature and last race of the day.
