KHAIRPUR, May 8: Growers and activists of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz on Monday held a procession on the National Highway about seven kilometres from here to protest against shortage of water. The procession culminated in a sit-in outside the office of executive engineer irrigation.

The protesters led by local Sufi poet Ghulam Ali Gohar, representatives of Abadgar Action Committee and local JSQM leaders told reporters that they had not received their share of water since three months from some 8-10 watercourses which were fed from Rajpari Regulator Mirwah Canal.

They said they had not been able to sow any seasonal crop due to the problem particularly cotton in Deh Hussainabad, Rabban Rajpar, Burgo and Panwari. The shortage had had a very bad impact on date palm and mango orchards, they added.

They complained that even the main water supply line which supplied drinking water to Hussainabad had been dry since three months.

The protesters, after observing sit-in, marched on the main roads of the city including Mall Road, Civic Centre Chowk and Chhatti Chowk.

In the meantime, another group of growers whose lands lie along tail-end of Weeho wah, Pandhero Wah, Faiz Ganj Wah and three other minors staged a protest demonstration in Pakka Chang against shortage of water in their watercourses since two months.

PROTEST: Growers, led by Lyari Union Council Nazim Ali Dharejo and Naib Nazim Hussain Bux Khaskheli, staged a demonstration outside the office of the district nazim here on Monday.
