Alam topples Iltifat

KARACHI, May 7: Rizwan Shamsi downed Eijaz Sarhadi in straight sets to cruise into last four of 35 plus singles in the National Seniors tennis championship at the Karachi Gymkhana on Sunday.

Rizwan was home 6-3, 6-3 to join Akbar Hayat Khan who was through by virtue of a walk over against Noor Mohammad.

Earlier, unseeded Alam Afzal Janjua overcame second seed M. Iltifat in three sets to reach pre-final Saturday night.

Alam conceded the second set in registering 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 win over his opponent who got a bye in the first round.

The winner of Syed Qutub-Tahir would join the above three to complete the semifinal lineup.

Results:

35 plus singles (quarterfinals):

Alam Afzal Janjua bt M. Iltifat 6-4, 2-6, 6-0.

Rizwan Shamsi bt Eijaz Sarhadi 6-3, 6-3; Akbar Hayat Khan w/o Noor Mohammad.

45 plus singles (semifinals): Azheruddin bt Shafiqur Rehman 6-1, 6-4.

Mixed doubles (first round): M. Iltifat-Sehr Khawaja bt Ronnie-Razia Babar 6-2, 6-2; Javed-Sonia Khan bt Mehdi-Aley Zehra 6-2, 6-1.
