Baby snatcher still at large
RAWALPINDI, May 7: No trace has been found yet of a two-day- old baby boy kidnapped by a woman posing as a doctor from a city hospital two weeks ago.
Dr Khalid Iqbal, medical superintendent of the District Headquarters Hospital, accepted negligence on the part of his nursing staff and has suspended a ‘duty nurse’.
But he told Dawn on Sunday that the guilty verdict had to wait the completion of investigations.
A police case has been instituted against the unknown woman who slipped away with the newborn on April 22 after tricking the mother, Samia Ghafoor, that he needed vaccinations.
Witnesses said the kidnapper, wearing a white coat to appear as a doctor, entered the gynea ward and told Samia the baby had to be taken to the vaccination room and asked who would accompany the baby.
Samia’s mother who was staying with her in the hospital went with the fake doctor. On reaching the vaccination room, the fake doctor asked the grandmother to bring the baby’s case file from the gynea ward.
When she returned with the file, the grandmother found that the “doctor” had disappeared with the baby to the horror of all.
Police and doctors said it was critical to trace the baby boy as he needed medical attention.
The kidnapper appeared to be a woman in her 30s, of medium build and height and of dark complexion. She was wearing blue Shalwar Kameez and a doctor’s overall.
MS Khalid Iqbal said a departmental inquiry had been ordered into the incident. “Police can interrogate the hospital staff, if needed,” he said.
