KARACHI, May 6: Administrative judge of anti-terrorism courts in Karachi on Saturday sent four activists of the banned Hizbul Tehrir to jail, who are facing charges under anti-terrorism law, turning down police request for further police remand.

Shahid Mehmood Sheikh 55, Syed Mohammad Munawar Saleh 41, Amir Amed, 36, and printer Mohammad Arshad, 30, were arrested by the police from Nazimabad on April 28 following a raid at a printing press where pamphlets of the proscribed organization were being published.

They were produced before AJ Justice Khliji Arif Hussain of the Sindh High Court for obtaining further police remand.

The police alleged that the accused were publishing pamphlets against President Pervaiz Musharaf to activate their organization despite ban. Two samples of objectionable pamphlets were also produced before the AJ.

In one pamphlet, Muslim Ummah was urged to forge unity in their ranks and files after tragedy of Nishtar Park and foil conspiracies of anti-Islamic forces. It said that the present government has failed to protect lives and honour of its citizens and urged the people to struggle for establishment of an Islamic form of government “Khilaphat”. In the second pamphlet, titled”President Musharaff was trying to establish Indian hegemony over Ummah”, President Musharraf was accused of betraying nation by backing out from principled stand on Kashmir and strengthening Indian claim on Kashmir.

The case was registered against them in Nazimabad police station under Section 11-F (6) and 11 (w) of Anti- Terrorism Act.

Investigation officer of the case sought further police remand of the accused till May 12. The AJ refusing the request remanded the Hizb activist to jail and ordered the investigation officer to submit chargesheet against them on May 11.

The federal government on Nov 20, 2003, declared Hizbul Tehrir as proscribed organization in exercise of powers of Section 11-B read with 11-E of ATA.

REMAND EXTENDED: The administrative judge of the anti-terrorism courts in Karachi on Saturday extended the police remand of a man till May 11.

Asadullah was produced before AJ Justice Khilji Arif Hussain of Sindh High Court for obtaining his further remand. The medical report regarding age of the accused was also presented before the AJ. As per medical report, age of the accused is 20 years.

Granting the request, the court extended remand of the accused till May 11. However, the court directed the investigation officer to submit charge-sheet on the next date of hearing.—PPI
