Taiwan leader cancels Alaska stopover

TAIPEI, May 4: Taiwan’s President Chen Shui-bian unexpectedly dropped plans to stop in the United States en route to Latin America on Thursday, angered by a US decision not to allow a higher-profile visit.

Mr Chen accused China of bullying Washington about the stopover.

While announcing that Mr Chen would not be stopping in Alaska, a spokesman said it was uncertain whether the president would make a stop on his way back from Latin America.—AFP
