Difficult opener for Pakistan


KUALA LUMPUR, May 1: Pakistan have been drawn to meet Holland in eight-nation Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Cup to be played at National Stadium, Bukit Jalil, from June 18-25.

Hosts Malaysia will take on India following day and play Australia on June 21. Malaysia are drawn in Group A along with defending champions Australia, India and South Korea.

Teams in Group B are Pakistan, Holland, Argentina and New Zealand.

F or first time since its inception in 1983, Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament will be played in morning with two-pool format and has been expended to eight teams.

Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) had to complete daily fixtures by 6.30pm to avoid clashing with World Cup Football matches.

Seven of eight teams taking part in the tournament will be playing in World Cup in Germany in September with exception of Malaysia, which failed to qualify.

This year's tournament will also see return of Holland which last appeared in 1996. Pan American champions, Argentina, will be making their debut in the tournament.

Fixtures: June 18: Argentina vs New Zealand 8.30am Australia vs India 3pm South Korea vs Malaysia 5pm

June 19: Holland vs Pakistan 8.30am South Korea vs Australia 3pm India vs Malaysia 5pm

June 20: Holland vs Argentina 3pm Pakistan vs New Zealand 5pm

June 21: India vs South Korea 3pm Australia vs Malaysia 5pm

June 22: Pakistan vs Argentina 3pm Holland vs New Zealand 5pm

June 23: Semifinals 1 7.30am

Semifinals 2 9.00am

June 24: 7th/8th placing playoff 3pm 5th/6th

Placing playoff 5pm

June 25: 3rd/4th placing playoff 3pm — final 5pm.
