KARACHI, May 1: City Nazim Mustafa Kamal on Monday claimed that water shortage problem will be solved within two days, as the city government will be able to fulfil 95 per cent water needs of the city.
“Karachi’s water problem will be solved within next two days, as K-III project has been linked with Hub Canal and additional water supply will start from Wednesday,” he said while talking to people gathered during his visit to different areas of the city.He inspected ongoing uplift projects in various localities during his five-hour-long visit along with Works and Services Committee Chairman Mehmudul Hasan, EDO Works and Services Sarfaraz Ali Shah and other officials.
Mustafa Kamal said that the city government had taken immediate notice of water shortage in some localities last week due to inadequate supply from Hub Dam and controlled the situation by improving distribution system and supplying K-III water to Hub Canal. “Within the next two days, there will be no major complaint regarding water supply in any locality and current water problem will be solved forever,” he claimed.
He said that after the completion of K-III project ahead of the scheduled time, K-IV project study had started in which water needs of the city would be determined for the next 50 years and new sources for these would be discovered.
The nazim said that the city government was trying its best to supply water to each locality. In this regard, he said that the work had begun with a cost of Rs900 million on equal basis in each towns for laying new lines. “We will be successful in a few months in saving 35 per cent water being wasted due to leakage. It will improve the situation further,” he said.
He said that the drive against water theft was expeditiously under way. During the last one week, more than 31 illegal hydrants had been closed down, and their owners were being arrested.
Mr Kamal said that water distribution system was also being made transparent and KWSB engineers had been asked to take elected representatives of their respective areas into confidence for the purpose.—PPI
