Makina captures trophy, Horse-of-the-Year title

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, April 30: Lady luck smiled on horse owner M. R. Hussain after his four-year-old filly, Makina, shone by sprinting to victory to land the Emirates Farm Trophy and was conferred the Horse-of-the-Year title in the Summer Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

In addition to grabbing the honours, Hussain ended the day with a magnificent hat trick. Earlier, Black Girl and Mera Jugnoo had done him proud by galloping to victory.

After failing to finish on board in the Sprinter’s Cup on April 2, Makina captured the Mile Championship on April 16 and outpaced fancied Victory Road by repeating the winning feat in the Emirates Farm Trophy.

She amassed 10 points from two wins to crown the prized award to be given in the next meeting on May 7. Besides, Makina will get an incentive of free training at the Emirates Farm for a year and would be covered by the five highly thoroughbred stallions, Ali Faisal Farooq told Dawn.

Makina and Victory Road fought closely in the 10 furlongs race until the last lap but the latter was overtaken by Al Faris after getting into straight and heading for finishing post.

With a number of titles including Independence Day Cup under her belt, Makina was home by two and a half lengths with Tariq Baran astride clocking two min nine seconds.

She ran in a good time completing each furlong in almost 12.9 seconds.

Al Faris who was predicted to put up a good show did it by settling for second place. Finishing further five lengths behind was Jadugar while Naseeb-e-Arab completed the frame.

Earlier, jockey Aashiq Ali presented Hussain two winners when he piloted home filly Black Girl in the third race and Mera Jugnoo in the sixth to perform a fine double.

Black Girl beat hot favourite The Conqueror’s by two and a half lengths on handicap. Similarly, Mera Jugnoo made amends when he returned with flying colours outpacing filly, Sky Girl by two and a half lengths.

Trainer M. Pervaiz also ended the day on a successful note by sending three winners-Black Girl, Mera Jugnoo and Makina.

Jockey Mohammad Essa also shared the honours with his contemporary Aashiq by slamming a splendid double in two back to back races.

His first winner was favourite mare, Ultimate Victory, in the fourth and bay horse, Daruwala in the next.

Haji Khuda Bux Rajar’s three-year-old filly, Stormy Kiss, as predicted, made it three in a row justifying her billing by picking up the opener by 10 lengths.

Fancied Eager Saint also proved her merit by sprinting to victory in the second to garb sixth successive race. It is owned by M. Shafiq and trained by S. Ehtisham.

Chestnut, Bilal Choice and dark bay horse, Gullu’s Government, finished second and third.

Three-year-old chestnut colt, Reyan King, also proved his mettle when he returned with flying colours in the seventh race.
