Washington criticises bombing

By Our Correspondent

WASHINGTON, April 12: The United States has strongly condemned the bombing incident in Karachi in which more than 50 people were killed, saying that there is “no conceivable justification” for such acts.

“We strongly condemn this attack and can see no conceivable justification for this atrocity,” State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack told briefing in Washington.

“We are saddened by the news of this bombing at a celebration of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Karachi,” he added.

He said the US consulate in Karachi was collecting more information about the attack but so far they had not heard of any American being injured in this “terrible incident.”

The spokesman said that a few days ago the State Department had updated its travel warning about Pakistan but that was not based on any information regarding Tuesday’s attack.

“I don’t have any information that would connect those two events,” he said. The State Department, he said, “continues to take appropriate steps” to help inform US citizens concerning issues related to travel to various countries. “And we take what we believe are the appropriate steps based on the information that we have.”
