KARACHI: 890 awarded degrees at 9th SSUET convocation

KARACHI, April 1: As many as 890 graduates of different batches were conferred master and bachelor degrees in engineering and medicine disciplines at the 9th convocation of the Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology on Saturday.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, was the chief guest of the graduation ceremony, who, along with Chief Justice of Sindh High Court Justice Sabeehuddin Ahmad, also gave away gold, silver and bronze medals to students securing top three positions in their respective exams. Judges of the Supreme Court and the Sindh high court as well as senior academics, engineers and dignitaries from other walks of life witnessed the proceedings.
Among the graduates, there were 9 masters of Science in Computer engineering and electrical engineering and 43 MBBS graduates coming from affiliated colleges as well. A student of electronic engineering, Naresh Rathore, was given two gold medals for securing over all second position and highest marks in engineering mathematics.
In his convocation address, the chief justice of Pakistan noted that the role of varsities should not confine to churning out graduates only but efforts should be made to put forward sensitized and responsible citizens as well. He remarked that quality of education delivered by a university could be gauged from the quality of both its faculty and graduates.
He regretted that there had been certain reservations in the education system of the country, while the present regime was taking measures to revamp the system.
He said that over the past few years a number of very good academic institutions had come up in the country, where the students were encouraged to engage in research activities and creative thinking.
The government is trying to create an enabling environment in which premium is placed on education and merit, in so much as it had amended the Election laws, thereby prescribing minimum academic qualifications for the public representatives as well, he mentioned.
He was of the view that the cherished goal of a knowledge-based society, with a scientific outlook, could not be achieved without hard work and dedication and therefore Pakistanis as a nation had to go an extra mile in order to make up for the lost time, if they wanted to catch up with pace of advancement in the developed countries.
Addressing the outgoing graduates, Justice Iftikhar said that they must note that the convocation was the end of their academic life, because learning was a lifelong process. He lauded the services of Sir Syed University and mentioned that it was rightly named after the person who was the greatest Muslim educationists of the nineteenth century subcontinent.
In his address of welcome, SSUET Chancellor Z. A. Nizami said that in any civilized society, the judiciary played the most important role as it guarded the rights and privileges of the citizens and was the interpreter of the law and the constitution of the country. It is the protector against the arbitrary acts of individuals or institutions and is the ultimate guarantor of the constitutional set up, he remarked.
He said that SSUET was presently engaged in setting up links and collaboration with the industry to identify “employment-oriented disciplines”.
The vice-chancellor, Dr Saiyid Nazir Ahmed, said that the varsity had today about 4,800 students enrolled in regular courses, including the MS courses. The total number of engineering graduates, the SSUET has contributed to the country over the years has reached 4,073, he added.
At the convocation, maximum of 348 degrees went to students belonging to Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, followed by electronic engineering bachelors (179) and 128 of bachelors of computer science programme.
The recipients of medals are as follows:
Gold medals sponsored by individuals; Areej Mahboob Jilani, M. Muneeb Ali, Kamran Hameed, Mohammad Ahmad Uddin, Abdul Raees and Naresh Rathore.
Silver medals sponsored by the varsity; Ainuddin Chisty, Naresh Rathore, Sana Mujtaba, Yasir Mannan and Zeeshan Ahmad.
Bronze medals sponsored by the varsity; Waheed Ahmad, Yousuf Rashid, Sana Hyder Khan, Mustansir and Asma Samdani.
