WASHINGTON, March 28: The US Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a comprehensive immigration bill that would create a foreign guest-worker programme and legalize America’s 11 million illegal immigrants. If it became a law, the proposal would make it possible for these immigrants, thousands of Pakistanis among them, to ultimately acquire US citizenship.
The Senate Judiciary Committee passed the measure by a 12-6 vote. It goes to the full Senate later this week, where a heated debate is expected over the guest-worker programme, which critics call an amnesty for some illegal immigrants.
