17th spot for Pakistan

MELBOURNE, March 26: Pakistan with one gold, three silver and one bronze finished the 18th Commonwealth Games by taking overall 17th place in the competition of 71 countries. Top of the table were hosts Australia followed by England and Canada where as India finished at the fourth place.

Above Pakistan the other countries were South Africa, Scotland, Jamaica, Malaysia, New Zealand, Kenya, Singapore, Nigeria, Wales, Cyprus, Ghana and Uganda (joint 15th place).

Pakistan’s Shujauddin Malik earned the only gold in the men’s 85-kg weightlifting, boxer Meharullah took a silver, Irshad Ali claimed the similar medal in shooting with Mohammad Irfan winning a bronze in weightlifting.

Pakistan won eight medals in the previous edition of the games at Manchester.

Haider Ali won the gold in boxing, besides one bronze each in hockey, and wrestling and two in shooting (team and individual event by Arshad Ali), Irfan three bronze in weightlifting.—APP
