LAHORE, March 25: Tanveer Ashiq caused an upset beating Pakistan junior champion Yasir Khan to emerge as champion of the All-Pakistan Open tennis championship Under-17 event on Saturday.
Tanveer laboured for almost an hour to overcome the challenge of favourite Yasir 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Yasir made an impressive start winning the first set breaking Tanveer’s first serve.
Tanveer bounced back with an impressive win in the second and third set.
Zohair Raza outclassed Muhammad Abid in straight set to win the U-13 final.
Zohair was in terrific form giving no opportunity to Abid to stage a comeback at any stage of the final before winning 6-4, 6-2. The ladies singles and Girls U-14 events entered the final stage.
Sarah Mehboob and Natasha Afridi qualified for the ladies’s final.
Sarah thrashed Sarah Manzoor 6-2, 6-1 while Natasha carved out a rather easy win against Saba Aziz 6-0, 6-1. Mehreen Izhar and Mehak Khokhar are set to clash in U-14 final.
Mehreen ousted Asia Malik 6-1, 6-2 while Mehak made exist of Munaza Malik 6-3, 6-2.
Aqeel Khan and Rashid Malik won the men’s doubles final beating Mahmood Khan and Inam Gul in one-sided final 6-4, 6-4.
Results: U-17 Boys semifinals: Yasir Khan bt Khurram Nazir 6-4, 6-4; Tanveer Ashiq bt Umar Babar 6-2, 1-0(retd).
Final: Tanveer Ashiq bt Yasir Khan 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Boys U-13 final: Zohair Raza bt Mohammad Abid 6-4, 6-2.
Ladies’ single (semifinals): Sarah Mehboob bt Sarah Manzoor 6-2, 6-1; Natasha Afridi bt Saba Aziz 6-0, 6-1.
