Call to ban Indian items

By Our Correspondent

BAHAWALPUR, March 24: Local chamber of commerce and industry president Mehboob Nasir Chaudhry has called upon the government to discourage import of substandard industrial products from India.

All the chambers of commerce and industry in Punjab had also voiced the similar demand in their joint meeting in Lahore on the other day.

The BCCI president, who reached here on Friday after attending the Lahore meeting, said the demand had been made to protect the local industry as substandard Indian products could damage the local industry.

He also urged the government to form a science and technology policy on the line which could help in the industrial growth of high standard.

Meanwhile, the meeting in Lahore had expressed concern over the damage caused due to smuggling and demanded solid steps against the menace.

It was also stressed to reduce mark-up for the protection and patronage of the industrial sector. It was further demanded that the government should take all chambers into confidence on the privatisation process of state-run institutions.

The meeting had also set up a ‘Punjab economic forum’ which would be headed by LCCI president Mian Anjum Nisar. While BCCI president Mehboob Nasir Chaudhry and Rawalpindi chamber president Jalil Ahmed Malik would be its vice-presidents.
