All middle schools to be upgraded in phases

ATTOCK, March 24: District Nazim Tahir Sadiq Khan has promised upgradation of all middle schools in phases and provision of basic facilities at primary schools. According to a statement, the nazim was speaking at a public meeting at Lakarmar area of Jand Tehsil on Thursday. He said the district government was utilizing all resources to bring improvement in the education sector.

Mr Sadiq said Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz had approved a grant of Rs400 million for electrification of all areas of the district by the end of 2007. The district government will also contribute Rs180 million to achieve the task in time, he added.

He also announced establishment of a branch of National Bank, a utility store, Wapda sub-divisional office and sub-tehsil office at Chhab union council to facilitate the people of Lakarmar, Injra and Mukhad. Member of the Punjab Assembly Pir Abbas Mohiuddin and PML Attock chief organizer Sardar Mumtaz Khan also spoke on the occasion.

DPO awarded: The government has conferred Sitara-i-Imtiaz on District Police Officer Capt (retd) Malik Zafar Iqbal Awan in recognition of his service in saving the life of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

The prime minister escaped a suicidal attempt on his life on July 30, 2004 when he was on election campaign for National Assembly seat near village Jaffar, tehsil Fatehjang. DPO Awan received the award from the Punjab Governor, Lt-Gen (retd) Khalid Maqbool on Thursday.

DRUGS SEIZED: The Attock Khurd police seized 1,022 kilograms narcotics during search of two vehicles at the Mullah Mansoor checkpost on GT road late Thursday night.

Police said the law enforcement persons at the checkpost signalled a car (SIJ-809), coming from Peshawar but it did not stop. Upon chasing by the police, two inmates abandoned the car and fled, taking advantage of the darkness, the police said. During search of the vehicle, police siezed 286kg hashish, 46kg hashish dust (Gardah) and 48kg opium.

Meanwhile, the police seized 217kg hashish, 415kg dust (Gardah) and 10kg opium during a search of a jeep bearing a government number plate (IDH-5782) with revolving light, at the same checkpost and arrested Khushdil Khan, resident of Peshawar.
